This year’s estimate is based on 226,000 acres, averaging 50.0 tons per acre, with contracted acreage down 11% from 2023. The harvest is expected to conclude in October, significantly earlier than last year due to extreme summer heat and variable growing conditions.
While mild spring weather and sufficient water resources set the stage for a promising crop, unusually high temperatures throughout the summer have adversely affected yields. Although concerns about the curly top virus emerged in the San Joaquin Valley, no significant damage has been reported. Early harvests indicate good quality, but the prolonged heat has cast uncertainty over the quality of late-season crops. Despite these challenges, shipments of processing tomatoes through August 24, 2024, show a 29% increase over the same period last year. However, this increase is somewhat misleading, as last year’s shipments were significantly delayed. Comparing current shipments to the mid-point of last year’s harvest, there is a 12% decrease.
